  6. Installing the Remote Access Service
  7.  
  8. 1.  Insert the Remote Access installation disk in drive A.
  9. 2.  Type a:\setup. The Setup box appears on the screen.
  10. 3.  Choose Install. The system installs the files and the Add COM Port box 
  11.     appears on the screen.
  12. 4.  Specify a port number (internal modems are usually set to COM2) and 
  13.     choose OK. The Configuration box appears on the screen. 
  14. 5.  Choose one or more of the following: 
  15.     -  To accept the configuration defaults as indicated on the screen, go 
  16.        directly to step 6. 
  17.     -  To configure an additional COM port for Remote Access, choose 
  18.        Add Port and specify the number.
  19.     -  To change the modem type, choose Select Modem and select your modem 
  20.        type.
  21.     -  To use your computer's network adapter card and modem at the same 
  22.        time, select the appropriate option button. This applies only to 
  23.        dual-role computers (computers that have both a network adapter card 
  24.        and a modem) that are running DOS and Microsoft LAN Manager Enhanced.

  26. 6.  Choose OK. The Install Complete box appears on the screen. 
  27. 7.  Restart your computer.

  29. For additional instructions use Setup Help or contact your system 
  30. administrator.

  33. Connecting to the Network
  34.  
  35. If you are running DOS and LAN Manager Enhanced on a dual-role computer, 
  36. start at step1. If you are running DOS and any other configuration, start 
  37. at step 2. If you are running OS/2 start at step 3.

  39. 1.  Type unload protocol.
  40. 2.  Type rasload to load the Remote Access drivers.
  41. 3.  Type rasphone to open the Phone Book. 
  42. 4.  Create and save a Phone Book entry (use Help).
  43. 5.  Connect to the network (use Help).

  45. Note: If you plan to run the Microsoft Windows (TM) graphical environment, 
  46. you must load the Remote Access drivers before starting the Windows 
  47. environment.

  50. Using the Network
  51.  
  52. You can now use the network exactly as if you were in your office.
  53.  
  54. Important: You can access data files across the telephone connection, 
  55. but loading software programs across the network (that is, across 
  56. the telephone line) will cause extremely long delays. Contact your 
  57. system administrator for more details.

  60. Disconnecting from the Network

  62. 1.  Type rasphone to open the Phone Book.
  63. 2.  From the Dial menu, choose Disconnect.

  66. Unloading Remote Access Drivers
  67.  
  68. If you are running DOS and LAN Manager Enhanced on a dual-role computer, 
  69. you should unload the Remote Access drivers prior to switching from your 
  70. modem to your network adapter card, or vice versa. If you are running 
  71. any other DOS configuration, unloading the Remote Access drivers will free 
  72. up memory that may be needed to run other applications. To unload the 
  73. Remote Access drivers:

  122. Network Access Problems
  123.  
  124. If you are denied access to your network, contact your system administrator. 
  125. You may not have a valid user account on your LAN Manager network, or you 
  126. may not have permission to dial in.

  128. Connection and Response Problems
  129.  
  130. If the Remote Access server is not responding, one or more of the following 
  131. may be true:
  132.  
  133. -  The Remote Access server is not running. Contact your system administrator.
  134. -  You are using an incompatible version of the Remote Access software. 
  135.    Contact your system administrator.
  136. -  The modem on the Remote Access server has been turned off. Contact your 
  137.    system administrator.
  138. -  Your modem and/or modem configurations are incompatible with the modem on 
  139.    the Remote Access server. Contact your system administrator. 
  140. -  Your hotel room telephone line cannot accommodate your current modem speed. 
  141.    Use a lower baud rate or contact the hotel manager to request a direct 
  142.    line.
  143. -  You specified the wrong telephone number. Update your Phone Book entry and 
  144.    redial. 
  145. -  You did not specify a special number that gives you an outside line. For 
  146.    example, some businesses and hotels require you to dial 9 before dialing 
  147.    your number.
  148. -  There is static on the telephone line. Contact your phone service provider.
  149.  
  150. Modem Problems
  151.  
  152. If your modem is not responding properly, one of the following may be true:
  153.  
  154. - Your modem has been turned off or unplugged.
  155. - Your modem is not properly connected to your computer. 
  156. - Your modem is in an inconsistent state. Restart or reset your modem and 
  157.   redial.
  158. - Your modem and/or modem cables are defective or not compatible for use with 
  159.   Remote Access. Contact your system administrator.
  160. - Your modem is not configured correctly. See your modem user guide or 
  161.   contact your system administrator. 
  162.  
  163. If your modem connects at a lower baud rate than you specified, the Remote 
  164. Access server may have a modem type different from what you are using. 
  165. Contact your system administrator.
  166.  
  167. Unloading Problems (DOS Remote Access Drivers Only) 
  168.  
  169. If you encounter problems when unloading the Remote Access drivers, one of 
  170. the following may be true:
  171.  
  172. -  A telephone connection still exists. The Remote Access drivers will not 
  173.    unload if a telephone connection exists. This protects you from accidently 
  174.    hanging up a connection and losing data. Save your data files, disconnect 
  175.    the phone line, and then try the rasload /u command again.
  176. -  You have an incorrect TSR unloading order. The Remote Access drivers will 
  177.    not unload if you load a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) program or 
  178.    start the Workstation service after typing rasload. Ensure that your 
  179.    loading order is correct.

  181. Net805 Error 
  182.  
  183. One likely cause of this error is the following incorrect settings in MODEMS.INF:
  184.  
  185. -  Port-to-modem speed (DTE speed) is higher than modem-to-modem speed (DCE 
  186.    speed), and
  187. -  Flow control is OFF.
  188.  
  189. To correct the configuration, make one of the following adjustments:
  190.  
  191. -  If you want flow control to be OFF, set the DTE speed and the DCE speed 
  192.    to the same value, or
  193. -  If you want to enable compression, set the flow control value to ON.
